FORT BELVOIR, Va. — Heritage profoundly influences one's approach to service and leadership, and my Puerto Rican background has been a key factor in shaping my journey. Rooted deeply in community values, perseverance and respect, my heritage has molded my leadership style and commitment to serving others. The wisdom imparted by my mother and sisters, along with the cultural values embedded in my upbringing, has been a guiding force throughout my leadership journey.

In Puerto Rican culture, leadership is not about wielding power but about fulfilling a responsibility to others. This perspective has imbued me with a strong sense of duty, reminding me that true leadership involves prioritizing the collective good over personal gain. It emphasizes that effective leadership is about serving others selflessly and nurturing the community's well-being.

Two cultural proverbs, "A mal tiempo, buena cara" — In bad times, put on a good face — and "Más vale tarde que nunca" — better late than never — serve as guiding principles in my approach to leadership. The first proverb reflects the Puerto Rican spirit of resilience and optimism. It teaches the importance of maintaining a positive attitude even in challenging circumstances. This wisdom has been a cornerstone in my leadership style, encouraging me to face adversity with a steadfast and hopeful mindset.

The second proverb underscores the value of perseverance and the importance of taking action despite obstacles. "Más vale tarde que nunca" embodies the belief that it is better to act late than to not act at all. This saying aligns with my cultural values and has informed my approach to overcoming challenges. It serves as a reminder to persist and adapt, demonstrating that leadership involves facing difficulties with resolve and continuing to strive toward goals even when the path is uncertain.

The wisdom of my mother and sisters has been instrumental in shaping my leadership style. My mother, in particular, played a pivotal role in instilling life lessons that have guided me through various challenges. Her approach to life, characterized by integrity and humility, has been a model for me. She taught me that true leadership is rooted in selfless service and unwavering commitment to others. Her ability to blend empathy with determination has profoundly influenced how I tackle challenges and uplift those around me.

My mother faced adversity with remarkable grace, and her deep commitment to our family has had a lasting impact on me. Her resilience and compassion exemplify the qualities of a strong leader. She showed me that leadership is not merely about achieving personal success but about supporting and empowering those around you. Her lessons have become the foundation of my approach to leadership, driving me to meet individual needs while steering the team toward common goals.

In addition to my mother, my sisters have been invaluable role models. Each of them demonstrates leadership in unique ways, whether through professional accomplishments, community involvement or personal endeavors. Their integrity and empathy have been a source of inspiration, motivating me to adopt similar values in my leadership practice. Observing their teamwork and mutual support has highlighted the power of collaboration, showing me that effective leadership involves working together to achieve shared objectives.

My sisters' loyalty and dedication to nurturing relationships reflect a deep commitment to those around them. Their example has reinforced my belief in the importance of loyalty and cooperation in leadership. Their collaborative approach to problem-solving and their unwavering support for one another have taught me that leadership is as much about fostering strong, supportive relationships as it is about guiding a team toward success.

In conclusion, my Puerto Rican heritage has significantly influenced my approach to service and leadership. The cultural values instilled in me, along with the wisdom of my mother and sisters, have shaped a leadership style characterized by integrity, community-focused collaboration, resilience, and advocacy. By integrating these elements into my leadership practice, I aim to lead with purpose and impact, reflecting the rich heritage that has guided me throughout my journey. My background has provided me with a unique perspective on leadership, one that emphasizes the importance of serving others selflessly, facing challenges with resilience, and fostering collaboration and loyalty. This heritage-driven approach continues to inspire and guide me as I strive to make a meaningful difference in the formations that I am in and those close to me.
