Like many schools nationwide, the substitute pool at White Sands School, located at White Sands Missile Range, has not been as extensive as it was before the pandemic. Jim Miller, the assistant principal of White Sands School, is seeking assistance from the White Sands Missile Range Community and the surrounding areas.
"We are trying to recruit as many individuals as possible to serve as substitutes," explained Miller. He cited the school's shortage of substitute teachers and hopes to raise awareness of this issue.
Miller describes White Sands as more than just a school—it's a tightly-knit military base community that caters from pre-kindergarten to eighth-grade students. He explains that it's an excellent place for first-time substitutes, as they will receive strong support from fellow teachers, administrators, and staff.
New substitutes will also value the small enrollment at White Sands School, which allows for smaller classes than other schools, fostering a strong sense of belonging and connection.
Miller encourages retirees, college students, parents whose kids go to the school, people who may have a day off during the week or have an RDO or anyone who enjoys being around kids to apply. He also clarified that this is not a babysitting job; the day is highly structured, and teachers have specific teaching plans that substitutes must follow.
"It's a part-time job, and you will have certain days off. College students are perfect for this situation; if they go to school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, they can be a sub on Tuesdays and Fridays," said Miller. "I know on Mondays and Fridays they pay $150 because those are the days most people take off for vacations or whatever it may be."
The pay for substitute teachers ranges from $105 to $125 per day, except for $150 on Mondays and Fridays, depending on the candidate's qualifications. Substitute teachers need at least 60 hours of college credit and must be eligible for a teaching license. Substitute educational assistants must have a high school diploma and be eligible for a teaching license. All substitutes are required to pass a background check.

Miller also urges people unfamiliar with White Sands Missile Range to apply, especially those in Las Cruces. Gaining familiarity with the White Sands community can be a fun experience, particularly for substitutes looking for a small school and smaller classes.
"It's a neat little ride to White Sands from Las Cruces. You can drink your coffee on the way; it's a beautiful site with mountains, and then you can decompress from the day on your drive home," said Miller. "It should not be intimidating; our front office can help you get on base and will ensure you know what to do once you are here."
