PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - On September 15, 2011, Picatinny Arsenal was officially designated as the Department of Defense's Joint Specialty Site for Guns and Ammunition, under the Base Closure and Realignment (BRAC) Law. Thirteen years later, the Arsenal continues to fulfill its mission of ensuring that the Joint Warfighter is equipped with the most safe, reliable, and lethal munitions.
The establishment of the Joint Center of Excellence for Guns and Ammunition at Picatinny was a crucial step in consolidating the research, development, and acquisition of guns and ammunition. The decision aimed to create synergy among various military programs, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in meeting the ever-evolving demands of national defense. As a result, Picatinny has become the heart of munitions innovation, driving advancements that ensure overmatch against any adversary.
"Picatinny Arsenal's impact on the Army and the nation cannot be overstated," said Maj. Gen. John T. Reim, Picatinny Arsenal Commanding General and Joint Program Executive Officer for Armaments and Ammunition, said to a crowd at the recent 9/11 Moving Flag Tribute. "This center of excellence enables us to push the boundaries of what is possible in munitions development. We are continually exploring new technologies and concepts that will keep us one step ahead on the battlefield."
Since its inception, Picatinny Arsenal has integrated operations across the Joint Program Executive Office (JPEO A&A), the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command- Armaments Center (DEVCOM-AC), Defense Contract Management Agency, U.S Army Contracting Command- NJ , and other tenant units on-site. This collaborative environment ensures that the Army's munitions research and procurement processes are streamlined, effective, and geared toward delivering the Army’s modernization priorities.
By leveraging cutting-edge technology and investing in the next generation of engineers, scientists, and civil servants, Picatinny Arsenal, works tirelessly to protect the Joint Warfighter, and the Nation while deterring would be adversaries across all domains of combat.
"No fair fights," Reim said. "It is on us at Picatinny to deliver overmatching capabilities to our Joint Warfighters by providing them with the tools they need to fight and win this Nation’s wars. We owe it to the men and women in uniform to ensure that when they face our adversaries, they do so with the confidence that they hold the tactical and technological advantage. It's not just about meeting the standard—it's about setting the standard, leading innovation, and ensuring our forces are never in a fair fight."
