In today's rapidly evolving operations, finding opportunities to connect, listen, and improve has never been more important. The 413th Contracting Support Brigade (CSB) command team has used Brown Bag Lunch sessions, a series of voluntary lunch listening sessions (reaching all echelons of the organization), to seek direct feedback. These open sessions have proven vital for gathering honest feedback, fostering engagement, and creating actionable changes to enhance operations. The success of these sessions has not only reshaped internal dynamics but has also strengthened the 413th CSB's support of U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) efforts.
One of the most significant strengths of the Brown Bag Lunch sessions is their informality. Conducted in a relaxed setting (generally in a conference room), these sessions create an environment where both military and civilian personnel feel comfortable sharing their ideas, concerns, or insights. The 413th CSB command team has hosted these sessions at every rank/grade within the organization, ensuring that every voice can be heard.
This approach has allowed leadership to tap into a diverse range of perspectives that might otherwise go unnoticed. From implementing work flexibilities like executing 4-10s (four 10-hour workdays) to improve work-life balance to holding a military manning off-site so that all military personnel have clarity on where they are going next in the organization, these Brown Bag Lunch sessions have become a critical space for transparent discussion on various change topics, including USARPAC contracting support efforts.
Command Sergeant Major Julio Calzada emphasized, "These Brown Bag Lunch sessions are more than just a way to connect—they give everyone, no matter who, the opportunity to be heard."
The command team Brown Bag Lunch sessions have become more than casual gatherings and conversations. They have evolved into a critical tool for organizational growth, leadership development, and mission success. By actively listening to personnel at all echelons and making necessary changes, the 413th CSB command team has fostered a culture of continuous open communication, continuous improvement, and purpose-driven action.
