FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — September marks National Suicide Prevention Month, and the Army is committed to supporting our military and civilians who may face challenges or have risk factors.
Suicide prevention starts with connections. By connecting with people we trust, we can support one another during difficult times.
Commanders, first-line supervisors, peers and family members need to ensure they know the signs of a subordinate, colleague, friend or relative in distress. Encourage your teams to familiarize themselves with the Army’s Suicide Prevention Policy (AR 600-92) and know what resources are at your disposal.
One effective method to assist those who may be at risk of suicide is to use what’s called the ACE method, short for ask, care and escort:
- Ask battle buddies and family members if they are thinking about harming themselves. Asking won’t increase the likelihood they will commit suicide or place the idea in their head.
- Care for battle buddies and family members by listening and reassuring them that immediate help is available. Calmly talk to them and use words like, “Let me make sure I understand you; do you mean…” and remove any means they might use to harm themselves.
- Escort battle buddies and family members to get help. This can be an emergency room, a primary care provider or a behavioral health professional. If they refuse to go, do not leave them alone. Call 9-1-1 if necessary.
Firearms are the most common method used in suicides and utilizing proper care and safe storage is critical in decreasing the likelihood of carrying out a suicide attempt. Also, refrain from alcohol consumption if you are struggling with thoughts of self-harm.
Fort Leonard Wood has a multitude of programs and experts, available to help individuals in our community, who might be struggling with stressors and considering self-harm. You can also visit the Army Resiliency webpage here for additional help and resources.
If you are struggling with any issues, it is important to seek help. Your chain of command and peers want you to stay connected with your support system, so we can be stronger together. You are important to our team and mission, and we are very proud to serve with each of you.
