On September 2nd, our Nation will pay tribute to American laborers whose commitment and contributions helped build the strength and prosperity of our great country. Thank you for your service and, by defending our freedoms and way of life, ensuring our Nation's workforce will continue to prosper.

The long weekend allows you to spend time with family and friends and enjoy the last days of summer. With that in mind, consider that summer activities also bring on certain hazards. Like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, this weekend will be a dangerous time on the roads. As of the date of this message, we have already lost 63 Soldiers to private motor vehicle mishaps this fiscal year. As history tends to repeat itself, holiday weekends greatly impact that number. Let’s finish this summer strong!

Starting now, we can prevent that trend of accidents by making risk management part of our daily lives — on the road, on the water, and everywhere in between. Play it safe and have a plan. Slow down and enjoy the drive. Use all appropriate safety devices, such as seat belts, life preservers, and personal protective equipment. Protect yourself, your family, and your friends by having a plan and taking your time.

Visit https://safety.army.mil for tools to help you and your Soldiers manage risks while off-duty. The 2024 Off-Duty Safety Awareness Presentation is now available and includes ready-to-use safety briefs, including speaker notes, on topics such as private motor vehicles and water safety. Another new tool is Safety Shorts, accessible via the new Safety Brief Tools tab on our website. These are one-slide briefings with quick video clips and safety tips for individual topics, such as motorcycle, open water, and grilling safety. They are accessible via a smartphone or tablet with no CAC required. Also, follow us on social media for additional tools and resources as we approach this holiday weekend and the holiday weekends to come.

The well-being of our people remains an Army priority. Enjoy this holiday weekend and come back safe and refreshed. Thank you for what you do for our Army and Nation. Have a happy and safe Labor Day.
