REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. — National Preparedness Month is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time.
"This is a crucial period for the Army Materiel Command workforce to ensure it remains ready and resilient for emergencies," said Ashley Stolze, Provost Marshal/ Protection Division Chief G3, Operations & Readiness Directorate.
Everyone plays a role in the Continuity of Operations (COOP) to ensure Mission Essential Functions and Essential Support Activities are continued during disruption of normal operations.
Officials suggest using this month as a reminder to double check emergency kits to ensure supplies like water, food, flashlights, waterproof clothes, phone chargers, prescription medications and first-aid are up-to-date and ready to go at a moment's notice.
Identifying common hazards, staying informed and having an action plan all play a crucial role in being ready before disaster strikes - whether it's floods, tornadoes, extreme heat, wildfires or earthquakes.
Emergency Action Plans (EAP) should include information about rally point locations and what to do in specific situations, like an active shooter, fires or health protection conditions. Knowing who to contact and where to go can save valuable time.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends having multiple ways to stay informed of local alerts and warnings. This year’s theme is "Start A Conversation," encouraging everyone to talk about the importance of being ready.
The ALERT! Mass Warning Notification System, or MWNS, is owned by the U.S. Federal Government and issues alerts to registered users for hazardous weather conditions, reporting delays and base closures.

"By promoting a culture of preparedness, emphasizing the importance of training and education, fostering interagency partnerships, and raising awareness about emergency preparedness, NPM helps the AMC workforce to effectively fulfill its mission and support the U.S. Army's readiness and sustainability," Stolze said.
