FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — August 26, 1920, marks the passage of the 19th Amendment, a historic act made possible due to the courage and determination of women who fought for universal suffrage and equality. Today is a celebration and reminder to continue to support and strive for equality.

On Women’s Equality Day, we recognize exceptional women who have served, who have turned adversity into opportunity, or who have helped others be all they can be. We also observe this day to reflect upon the importance of serving together on a cohesive team in which equality is everyone’s concern.

The percentage of women in both the enlisted and commissioned ranks continues to grow. Since the American Revolution, more than 3 million women have served in or with the armed forces and have contributed immensely to the strength and resilience of our military.

Any of us can respectfully use our voice to improve our organizations or situations, and that is how women’s suffrage began — one person at a time, one voice striving toward equality, until that one voice became many. Regardless of gender, rank or title, we can all renew our commitment for equality and treating every person with dignity and respect. We can help one another to live our values and maximize our potential, making us, collectively, a stronger force.
