Railway viaduct in Bolesławiec celebrates 174 years
The Bolesławiec viaduct is one of the most interesting monuments of technology in this part of Europe and is one of the largest stone railway bridges in Europe. The viaduct, thanks to which Bolesławiec was on the railway map and gained connections with Wrocław, Berlin and Dresden, is 178 years old. The impressive building impresses not only lovers of technical monuments. It was not long before it was blown up.
The construction of the viaduct in Bolesławiec began in 1844 lasted two years. It cost 400,000 thalers. Although this amount was dizzying for these times, the specialists calculated that only the close location of the quarries, from which the raw material was drawn for the construction of the viaduct, allowed to reduce the construction costs by half.
On the scaffolding, a large forest went under the axe – 12,000 trunks were used. More than 600 people performed the work in the construction of the viaduct, and another 3,200 were related to the construction of indirectly related.
The bridge opened on July 27, 1846. The unloaded traffic of the trains was started on 1 September 1846. The Bolesławiec viaduct was admired by King Frederick Wilhelm IV, who on that day made a ceremonial opening of the railway crossing over Bobr.
After the construction of a stone viaduct on the Bobr, an iron railway was taken to the city. Thanks to this, in 1851 Bolesławiec received a railway connection with Wrocław and Dresden.
The Bolesławiec viaduct is 490 meters long, 8 meters wide and 26 meters high.
The designer of the bridge was the Bolesławiec architect Frederick Engelhardt Gansel, who modeled himself on Roman aqueducts and used a light-yellow sandstone from a quarry in nearby Good for construction.
