The Garrison’s second annual Wellness Summit, “Benefits of Healthy Habits,” on Aug. 20 is a chance for participants to take time out from their busy schedules and focus on self-care.
“We’re providing an event that discusses the five pillars of wellness – mental/emotional, physical, social, community and financial,” Tim Rolfe, family advocacy program manager, said.
The summit, presented by the Family Advocacy Program, will be from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Overlook at 150 Golf Course Road. It is open to anyone 18 years and older with access to Redstone Arsenal.
The keynote speaker will be Valerie Francis, the health promotion program manager at Army Materiel Command, G1 Military Human Resources and Family Readiness Division. A registered nurse, Francis develops wellness and resilience programs for the command, which has more than 165,000 employees.
During her class, “Mental Magic: How to Stop Sabotaging Your Health and Wellbeing,” Francis will discuss the link between thoughts and their consequences and how getting our head in the right space can have a positive effect on the end result and on performance and relationships.
The sign-in for the summit, a Resource Fair and exhibits will be from 7:30-8 a.m.
Registration is through Aug. 16 at forms.osi.apps.mil/r/PcjuFuXuzf, and participants can sign up for the courses they prefer, or they can stay for the entire event.
Refreshments will be provided during the lunch break, and annual suicide prevention training will be held then.
Rolfe said a blood drive will be available the entire day, and attendees will register separately with the provider for their specific times to donate.
