An unusual phenomenon again in the sky

"Closing Stars" is Perseids - one of the most regular swarms of meteors whose orbit intersects every year with the Earth from July 17 to August 24, 2024. Perseids are best seen in our country on August 10-14, and this year the night with the most "falling stars" is the one from August 12 – 13, 2024.

"Perseids is one of the most spectacular swarms of meteors that illuminates the summer sky every year - says Justyna Olszewska, PhD student at the Institute of Astronomical Observatory from the Faculty of Physics of the Adam Mickiewicz University.
“Perseids come from the remains of comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, and the Earth enters them into it every year in its orbit in mid-August, which causes the phenomenon of ‘falling stars’. Radiant, the point from which meteors seem to be flying, is in the constellation of Perseus. This year, the maximum of Perseids falls on the night of August 12 to 13" - explains the researcher.

“To enjoy the best views, it is worth going to places with minimal light pollution. In the vicinity of Poznań, the excellent location is Ostoja of the Dark Sky in Izdebna and Chalin, and if you are looking for something closer, it is worth visiting the Morasko Nature Reserve" - he adds. "The All-sky Light Pollution Survey (Nurems) stations will soon be near both locations to measure artificial light pollution. One of them will be located on the roof of the Faculty of Physics. All these places will provide ideal conditions for observing this amazing phenomenon. Before the observation, I also recommend looking at the https://www.lightpollutionmap.info website" - concludes Justyna Olszewska.

For observation, no special equipment is needed - the pots are one of the easiest to observe in the sky. Just a little patience and a cloudless sky. It is best to visit the city - the city lights make it difficult to admire phenomena in the sky.
