FORT LIBERTY, N.C.-- U.S. National Farmers Market Week is held the first full week of August and highlights the importance our farmers are to the Nation’s food system. Keeping our heroes in mind, farmers markets can foster a more inclusive, healthier food source to improve their quality of life. In keeping with the Department of Defense’s Healthy Base Initiative focused on introducing farmers markets to military posts. Although only some military posts offer farmers markets, the surrounding community farmers markets can also be a great resource to our soldiers, families and veterans. The Military Health System aims for improved overall health, whether that is fueling service members by achieving maximum physical and mental performance, answering the widespread issue of veteran food insecurity, or just offering a learning opportunity for children and their families about healthy foods and where they come from.

When was the last time you went to the farmers market? Do you know where your local farmers market is held, and when?

Farmers Markets have grown in popularity due to our interest in obtaining fresh, locally sourced products directly. Why is it important to buy local?

Access to fresh nutritious foods.

Promotes food security and helps decrease the existence of food deserts (limited access to healthful foods).

Supports your local economy by keeping the money within the community.

Reduces environmental impact by reducing carbon footprint and greenhouse gases with less transportation (food miles).

Builds healthy communities.

How to save money when shopping local?

Look up your local seasonal produce guide and determine what is in season before you head to the market.

Bring cash.

Buy in bulk if a discount is offered and your family size is large.

Consider visiting later in the day to get the best prices (some farmers will reduce their prices to make room for future products).

Try something new that may be less expensive than the same fruits and vegetables you typically purchase.

Before you head to your local farmers market consider these last minute shopping tips; bring your own bag, walk through the market initially to identify what is available, and be okay with “ugly” produce. I encourage you to talk to the farmers the next time you head to your local farmers’ market.

The National Farmers Market Directory (online) provides a list of farmers markets in your area.
