SAN ANTONIO, TX. — The Army Capability Management - Army Health System (ACM-AHS) marked a significant leadership transition during a ceremonial event at the Education Service Center in San Antonio on July 17-18. The event celebrated the official transfer of authority from outgoing ACM-AHS Director Col. Venessa Worsham to incoming Director Col. James W. Cobb.

Ceremony Highlights the Importance of Leadership Transition

The event underscored the critical nature of seamless leadership transitions in maintaining the effectiveness and readiness of military healthcare systems. By formally passing the baton from Worsham to Cobb, the ACM-AHS reaffirms its commitment to excellence and innovation in support of soldiers' health and operational readiness. The host for the ceremony was Joseph Holland, Deputy to the Commanding General, Medical Center of Excellence.

In his opening remarks, Holland emphasized the event's significance, "This transition is not just a transfer of authority but also a reaffirmation of our commitment to the health and readiness of our Soldiers. Col. Cobb’s leadership will undoubtedly steer us towards new heights.”

MED CDID director, Col. James Jones shared his reflections on the importance of the transition. “Ensuring continuity in leadership is crucial for maintaining the high standards of care and operational readiness that our Soldiers deserve. I have full confidence that Cobb will continue to build on the solid foundation laid by Worsham.”

Worsham was recognized for her leadership and contributions to the ACM-AHS. Under her guidance, numerous initiatives were successfully implemented to improve Soldier health and operational readiness.

“Col. Worsham’s tenure has been marked by significant advancements in our health systems, ensuring that our Soldiers receive the best care possible," said Holland. “Her legacy is one of dedication and innovation.”

The ceremony also focused on welcoming Cobb, who expressed his enthusiasm for the role.

"I am deeply honored to take on this responsibility. Our Soldiers deserve the highest healthcare standards. I am committed to advancing our capabilities to meet and exceed those standards. Together, we will continue to innovate and improve the health system to support the Joint War Fighter!” said Cobb.

The Passing of the Hammer

A highlight of the ceremony was the symbolic passing of the AFC hammer, representing the transfer of authority and continuity of mission. The narrator explained, “The transfer of authority is a traditional ceremony rich with symbolism and heritage. The key to the ceremony is the passing of the Army Futures Command hammer.”

Sgt. Maj. Stephen M. Robbins, the MED CDID Sergeant Major, secured the hammer, initiating the transfer sequence by first having Robbins pass the hammer to Worsham, symbolizing the trust and responsibility placed in her leadership. Worsham then passed the hammer to Jones, symbolizing the relinquishing of her authority and finally, Jones handed the hammer to Cobb, marking the acceptance of his new role and responsibilities.

The new ACM-AHS Director then passed the hammer back to Robbins, symbolizing the faith, trust, and confidence placed in the Non-Commissioned Officer Corps.

The narrator concluded, “Ladies and gentlemen, the transfer of authority is complete. Join me in a round of applause for the new ACM Army Health System Director, Col. James Cobb.”

As Cobb steps into his new role, the ACM-AHS is poised for continued growth and innovation. This leadership change signifies a renewed commitment to excellence in military healthcare, ensuring that soldiers receive the best care and support.
