Children of Troopers from the 1st Cavalry Division’s Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion earn their Spurs after completing several challenges during a kids spur ride at Fort Cavazos, TX, July 12.

The children participated in modified events designed to simulate military training exercises, learning warrior skills and battle drills. Some of these events included a water balloon toss, firing water guns, and bandaging a teddy bear.

“The intent of this entire event was to have the families come together, bring their kids here so that we can build a better relationship with the families that are forward,” said Capt. Kasandra Dodd, Home Station Mission Command (HSMC), Headquarters Support Commander.

It is important for military families to have people who are there for them when one of their family members is away and to create opportunities to come together as a community.

It’s a great experience for my daughter and all of my other kids to have a chance to earn something not every soldier that Cavalry unit does earn but it coveted,” said Sgt. First Class Katlina Chiappara, HSMC G2 Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge.

The event was a unique and fun opportunity for the children who came to participate.

“It’s nice to come out here and be able to earn something that not everyone can earn and show my dad,” said Lexi Chiappara, daughter of Katlina Chiappara.

Events like this help build cohesion between service members and their families, also bringing awareness to the heritage of the 1st Cavalry Division.

All children were encouraged to “Live the Legend” as their parents strive to do everyday.
