"Command at any level is a challenge, and this one is no different. It offers some unique opportunities," Dirkes shared, highlighting the many challenges Smith successfully navigated during his command. "Given a very small unit, geographically isolated from its command, which is in turn geographically isolated from its command, you are on a multi-service base, which is different, and you are carrying the weight of a mission that can't be allowed to fall behind. That is all difficult stuff."

Smith took a moment to express his deep gratitude to the leadership at White Sands Missile Range, acknowledging their unwavering support during his command. He also anticipated the forthcoming exciting changes at the installation, extended a warm welcome to Lancaster, and expressed appreciation for his family.

"It has been wonderful working with every one of you and enabling the men and women at White Sands and Holloman to dutifully execute our collective missions," said Smith. "I really am honored to have been part of this leadership team that's been the driving force behind the culture and productivity here."

As the ceremony concluded, Lancaster addressed the audience, expressing his excitement for the new assignment and thanking his family for their uncompromising support.

"In my time here, I will continue to collaborate with the joint enterprise, working cohesively and looking for efficiencies. Communication and accountability are the key to our success," said Lancaster.
