ORANGE BEACH – The Redstone Rocket claimed the highest award a newspaper can win in the Alabama Media Awards on June 29 – taking first place in the General Excellence category of its division.
The contest winners were announced during the Alabama Press Association’s annual summer convention held at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, Alabama.
“We have a great newspaper staff, and we receive tremendous support from Redstone Arsenal and our community partners,” Skip Vaughn, the Rocket’s editor, said. “The Rocket is a stellar collaboration between the Army and Tennessee Valley Media. We've won first place for general excellence in three of the past five years. We plan to continue our winning tradition for our readers who deserve the best.”
This year, 56 publications submitted 1,770 entries across five divisions, which were judged by the Hoosier State Press Association.
“The Redstone Rocket continues to excel not only as an award-winning statewide publication but as one of the top military publications in the country,” French Salter, the Rocket’s general manager, said. “Winning 40 awards in this competition as well as being honored with the most prestigious award is awesome.
“The Redstone Rocket plays a vital role in serving and communicating the messages of Redstone Arsenal.
“We have a top-notch staff that tirelessly works to do that each day, and I want to thank them, as well as the command at Redstone, for allowing us the privilege to do that.
“Winning never gets old!”
Of the 32 editorial awards and eight advertising awards the Rocket’s staff won over the weekend, 13 were first-place awards, 13 were second-place awards, and 14 were third-place awards.
