Dear First Army Family,
Independence Day celebrates the July 4, 1776, approval of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress. The formal vote for separation from Great Britain was two days earlier on July 2. On that day, General George Washington’s General Orders read:
“The fate of unborn millions will now depend, under God, on the courage and conduct of this Army… We have therefore to resolve to conquer or die.”
On July 9, 1776, Washington informed the troops that Congress had formally “dissolved the connection” between “this country” and Great Britain and declared the United Colonies of North America to be free and independent states. With the Army assembled, brigade and regimental commanders read the Declaration of Independence, copies of which had just arrived, telling the world that the Army was now fighting to establish a new and independent nation.
Today we celebrate the birth of the United States of America, and we remember the founders for their ideals and their achievements and sacrifices in the face of tremendous adversity. Let us also remember the Soldiers who pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor to embody the words of our Army motto, “This We’ll Defend.” For no intentions or declarations of freedom or independence can be realized without Soldiers prepared to fight and win on their behalf.
The fate of our nation still depends on courage and conduct of this Army. First Army’s ability to deliver trained and ready units to fight and win for America is vital to the American interest and our way of life. Stay safe this weekend and take care of your teammates. Thank you for what you do for our Army and our nation.
First In Deed. Earn the A. This We’ll Defend.
