For the second consecutive year, some of the world’s best young golfers competed in a tournament at Redstone Arsenal.
The American Junior Golf Association tournament from June 25-27 at the Links had 78 juniors, ages 12-19. There were about 12 from other countries and 15-20 from Alabama. It had 51 boys and 27 girls competing on the Warrior course.
“This would be our fourth year in Huntsville and second year at the Links at Redstone,” tournament director Ben Crow said. The association is out of Braselton, Georgia, near Atlanta.
Girls’ winner Alexis Lamadrid, 15, of Phoenix, Arizona, shot a 10-under 206 for the three days, 65-68-73. She has played golf 10 years.
Asked how she won, she said, “I think I just maintained myself, kept myself in the moment. I had fun, yeah. I think that’s most important.”
Boys’ winner Eli Felty, 18, of Richmond, Virginia, shot a 4-under 212 with 72-67-73. He has played golf 11 years.
“I would definitely say my irons were a big part (in winning),” Felty said. “I hit 16 greens the second day which helped me shoot 67, so that was definitely what helped set me apart.”
Crow shared why the tournament returned to Redstone this year.
“We’re doing it here (at the Links) because we were here last year and we liked it,” Crow said. “And we raise money for charitable organizations. And one of those organizations is Village of Promise. It’s a charity (in Huntsville) that works with veterans so that’s a neat connection that relates this course to them.”
This year alone the tournament raised more than $6,000 for Village of Promise, Crow said.
