Pahlawan Warrior was conducted primarily between the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s cavalry squadron “Blackfoot Troop” and two platoons of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Brunei Land Force. Approximately 110 U.S. servicemembers participated, including a small group of Soldiers from the 700th Support Battalion, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Oklahoma National Guard and Washington National Guard.
The exercise consisted of subject matter expert exchanges, a three-day jungle-based field training exercise, live-fire exercise and cultural day.
The training prepared Army Soldiers and their foreign counterparts to respond effectively to potential crises or natural disasters in the region. At the squad level, it allowed Soldiers to become accustomed to difficult foreign terrain and weather as well as learn from their RBLF counterparts.
“They have lived the environment, they know it way better than us,” said Staff Sgt. Chad Kniaz-Schlipp, a cavalry scout assigned to Blackfoot Troop. “What we need to do is train with them, listen to them, and take their experiences so we can understand what we need to do to adjust towards fighting in their environment.”

Pahlawan Warrior is one of many exercises conducted as part of the U.S. Army Pacific Command’s Operation Pathways. Exercises like Pahlawan Warrior contribute to the Joint Force’s peacekeeping capabilities in the Indo-Pacific.
“For USARPAC the series of exercises we call Operation Pathways binds our efforts with [the Royal Brunei Land Force],” said Lt. Col. Joshua Long, commander of the 29th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd IBCT, 25th Infantry Division. “To share in a stable, secure, healthy and prosperous region.”
According to Long, in increasingly turbulent times, partnership is the key to preventing conflict in the region.
“This exercise gives both of our nation’s cause to celebrate,” Long said. “We can build bonds rooted in trust. Without trust in our partners, we cannot prevail.”
