WASHINGTON (June 28, 2024) – The 11th annual Maj. Gen. Harold J. “Harry” Greene Awards for Acquisition Writing competition is underway. Lt. Gen. Robert M. Collins, Principal Military Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology and Director of the Army Acquisition Corps, announced the start of the annual competition today to encourage critical writing focused on Army acquisition issues.

“Through the years, this writing competition has showcased the tremendous talent and creativity within our community and those associated with it,” Collins said. “This is a tremendous opportunity to drive the dialogue on the important role of acquisition in delivering capabilities to our warfighters.”

Each year, entrants are invited to share their ideas, expertise and experiences by writing about them. “We need to apply critical thinking and a strategic perspective to communicate our challenges and opportunities in order to improve the acquisition process and obtain better outcomes,” Collins said.

Prospective authors may submit essays, articles or opinion pieces from 500 to 1,800 words in one of the following four categories: Acquisition Reform, Future Operations, Innovation or Lessons Learned. A panel of judges will evaluate and select the top entries in each category, and the winners and honorable mentions will be published in a supplement accompanying the spring edition of Army AL&T magazine. In addition, they will be honored at the U.S. Army Acquisition Executive’s Excellence in Leadership Awards Ceremony currently scheduled to be held in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 9, 2025.

Submissions must be unclassified, original and not previously published or submitted to a writing competition. All entries must be submitted by email no later than midnight Sept. 30, 2024. Additional information about the competition is available at www.army.mil/asaalt, including the call for submissions.

The annual acquisition writing competition is named for Maj. Gen. Greene, the Deputy Commanding General of the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, who was killed on Aug. 5, 2014, while making a visit to Marshal Fahim National Defense University in Kabul, Afghanistan.

“Harry was an inspirational leader, and his contributions to our Army, the joint force and our nation will continue to endure for many years to come,” Collins said. “Through these annual writing awards, we remember Maj. Gen. Greene’s 34 years of distinguished service and his lasting impact on the defense acquisition community.”
