FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — On July 2, 1776, the Second Continental Congress voted unanimously in favor of independence from Great Britain. Two days later, on July 4, delegates from all 13 colonies signed the Declaration of Independence. This historic document laid the groundwork for our democracy by rejecting monarchy and declaring, “all men are created equal.” While the American Revolution continued until 1783, we celebrate the birth of our great nation on the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Leaders, it is critical to know your teammates and stay connected. Prior to leaving for the holiday weekend, discuss planning and safety with those in your care.
Fireworks and the Fourth of July go hand-in-hand. Fireworks are unauthorized for private use on Fort Leonard Wood. If you are using fireworks off post, obey state and local laws, ordinances and regulations; read the instructions before use; and maintain a safe distance. Never mix fireworks and alcohol consumption. Alcohol use adds risk in every activity; it impairs your judgement and slows your reaction time. If you plan on drinking, do so legally and safely; have a plan, never drink and drive, and never handle firearms under the influence.
As summer temperatures and humidity levels remain high, monitor your time outside. Remain hydrated and wear sunscreen. Limit strenuous activities to the cooler parts of the day and have a plan to cool off afterward.
Enjoy the outdoor recreation Missouri has to offer. If you plan to operate a recreational vehicle or watercraft, ensure you are properly licensed and follow all local and state regulations. Hiking is a fun way to explore the outdoors this summer. If you plan on hitting the trails, be safe. Ensure you communicate with others where you’re going, how long you are planning on being out, and when you are planning to return. Mitigate risk by taking your time and watching your step; be careful and watch where you are walking, especially on slippery areas or near cliffs. Stick to dry paths and solid rock areas with good footing. There will often be uneven ground, holes, bumps on rocks and stumps near a cliff’s edge, so pay attention when taking photos, videos or looking at the scenery — don’t get distracted.
We are proud to serve with you and want you to observe Independence Day safely.
