The 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command hosted Hawaii's Boys Youth Impact Program at the Fort DeRussy Museum on June 18. Air defenders demonstrated a sample of military life, such as the Army Combat Fitness Test and dawning combat equipment.
"It is an opportunity for children from around the island to participate in STEM, athletics, and military familiarization, " said 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Commander Brig. Gen. Patrick Costello. "We have supported the YIP for seven years, and each year, it keeps growing."
By emphasizing personal and professional development, the program offers a supportive environment where participants can explore their potential and shape their future endeavors. YIP is held at the University of Hawaii, a testament to the collaborative effort between the military, local businesses, and educators. This unique partnership provides a summer camp centered around Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), leadership development, and sports. The youth participate in classroom demonstrations during the morning and sports in the afternoon, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility for their development.
An integral part of the Army's involvement in the Youth Impact Program is the emphasis on leadership and guidance. Through their collaboration with experienced military personnel who serve as mentors, participants have a unique opportunity to learn from individuals with a wealth of knowledge and experience. These mentors, with their valuable insights, advice, and support, play a significant role in guiding the youth in their personal and professional journeys, making a profound impact on their future.
"This is my second year volunteering. I help with signing up, chauffeuring, and keeping the program running. Some of the kids do not have meals or family," said Aurielyn Fernandez, Honowai Elementary School teacher. "Here they get to learn and know college students, which opens their eyes to see what they can be when they get older."
Participants in the program are exposed to various military personnel, fostering the development of a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility. By engaging in challenging activities and tasks, the youth learn the importance of dedication, perseverance, and teamwork. This program serves as a platform for participants to harness their potential and explore their capabilities in a supportive environment. The transformative experiences gained through the program instill a sense of discipline and accountability that can benefit them in various aspects of their lives, marking a significant positive change and growth in the participants.
