FORT NOVOSEL, Ala.--Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Shawn L Jones, U.S. Army Survive, Evasion, Resistance, Escape (SERE) training manager, recently received the Order of St. Michael-Airborne award, guardian level, for his achievements as an Army Paratrooper.
Jones spent 21 years on jump status, 18 years in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, and retired in 2017 with 31 years total active-duty time. Since retirement, Jones has continued serving on Fort Novosel with the U.S. Army SERE training.
Jones stated that the highlight of his career was having the opportunity to jump into Israel. “I got my Israeli wings, Jordanian wings, British wings, Thai wings, and had a chance to jump with the prince of Jordan back in 1996. As far as jumping goes, that memory is hard to beat,” said Jones.
The Order of Saint Michael-Airborne is presented to those who demonstrate gallant devotion to the principles of selfless service, sacrifice, and courage embodied by the American Paratrooper, Air Assault Soldier, and Special Operator. The award has only been earned by 67 people and Jones said he was honored to be recognized in this way by the National Infantry Association.
