FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — June 14 marks the U.S. Army’s 249th birthday. On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress met and approved the establishment of the Continental Army. Soldiers from the New England colonies were rallied, and on June 15, 1775, George Washington was unanimously elected by Congress to serve as commander in chief of the new Army.
Two years later, on June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress officially united the 13 colonies under the same banner by adopting the flag of the United States.
With the 249th Army Birthday and National Flag Day, the month of June is recognized as Army Heritage Month to honor our organization’s distinguished history and the banner, which has flown through numerous wars and campaigns in defense of our great nation. To read more about the Army’s founding and history, and Army Heritage Month, visit the U.S. Army website.
We take pride in celebrating our history and have numerous events planned at Fort Leonard Wood to support the Army’s Birthday and Army Heritage Month.
On June 13, we will host the Army Birthday golf scramble at Piney Valley Golf Course; the shotgun start will begin at noon. On June 14, there will be a division-style Army Birthday run, beginning at 5:30 a.m. on Gammon Field, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence Plaza. A 5K color run/walk will begin at 8 a.m. June 22 at Abrams Theater, and we will end the month with an Army Heritage Month event, starting at 9 a.m. June 25 at Nutter Field House.
