Volunteers recognized for service at WSMR

Volunteers at White Sands Missile Range were recognized for their service during a Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony May 14 at the Frontier Club.

“Today we recognize the efforts and contributions of our volunteers for their service during Jan. 1, 2023, thru Dec. 31, 2023,” said Maria Pangborn, Volunteer Program Manager with Army Community Service.

“Thank you for your impact to our community.”

“Through your volunteer work you have set an example to be emulated and have significantly enhanced the quality of life in this community. You are proof that one person can truly make a difference,” read the certificate presented to volunteers which was signed by WSMR Commander Col. George C. Turner and Garrison Commander Col. David A. Mitchell.

The following volunteers were presented a certificate by WSMR Commander Col. George C. Turner, WSMR Command Sgt. Maj. Michael S. Cordery and Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Jamal N. Latore: Amanda Cordery, Cristina Ruiz, Dontrevius Thomas, Jonatan Perez, Joseph Miller, Manely Pierre Asencio, Colin McGhehey, Kelly-Ann Dowers, Spc. Charlie Ruffin, Josh and Nalani Fosher, Sam Bothern, and J.T. Thomas.

Also recognized were the nominees for Volunteer of the Year: Cristina Ruiz, Spc. Josue Chavez, and Kelly-Ann Dowers.

The Volunteer of the Year award went to Spc. Josue Chavez, who was not able to attend. He contributed over 150 hours to the WSMR BOSS program and participated in several events.

The command group was also presented with a check for $94,793.45 representing the financial value of volunteers’ contributions to the community.

Turner thanked everyone who attended the event and then went on to thank the volunteers.

“Our mission would not happen without you. Everything you do counts for us.”
