Fort Knox, Ky. — Hook, line and sinker! For a third year in a row, VFW Post 10281 will be hosting the Fort Knox Kids Fishing Derby on June 1 at Camp Carlson Lake with support from Fort Knox Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

The derby will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with registration from 8:30-9:30 a.m. and fishing beginning at 9:45 a.m.

The event is free and open to everyone, though only children 15 years of age and younger will qualify to register for a free tackle box, fishing rod and the chance to earn awards. Registered children must attend the end-of-event ceremony at 1 p.m. to receive their fishing rod and tackle gear.

Every registered child will receive a participation award, but there are multiple other awards available to win, to include smallest fish, biggest fish, most fish and most fish based on weight. These awards will be broken down by age group.

Age groups:

Tiny Tots: 0-5 years old

Junior Anglers: 6-9 years old

Intermediate Anglers: 10-12 years old

Senior Anglers: 13-15 years old

Bait and fishing poles will be provided if needed and volunteers will be on hand to help children bait their hooks. Though event organizers have fishing rods that children can borrow, there is a limited supply, so they will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis. There will also be free hotdogs, hamburgers, sides, chips and drinks for children in attendance.

Registration forms are due by May 29, and all members in attendance must attend the safety briefing before the event in order to fish.

The inclement weather date will be the following day, June 2, 2024.
