Dugway Proving Ground (DPG), Hill Air Force Base, Tooele Army Depot, and the Utah National Guard met with regional tribal governments as part of the Utah Department of Defense (DoD) Annual Tribal Meeting. The meeting, held April 11-12, 2024, at Camp Williams, is part of DPG’s government-to-government consultation program with federally recognized tribes, as required by federal regulations. The goal of the meeting is to identify resource management concerns, engage in dialogue, and build relationships.
The annual face-to-face meeting is held with American Indian tribes who claim ancestral and ongoing ties to lands managed by the DoD in Utah. The 2024 meeting was the 20th anniversary year of the meeting, which was begun by Hill AFB and DPG joined in 2008.
Attending tribal governments included leadership and representatives from the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation, Navajo Nation, Northern Arapaho Tribe, Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, Shoshone Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of the Fort Hall Reservation, and Te-Moak Tribe of the Western Shoshone.
Hosting duties rotate among the Utah DoD agencies and the 2024 meeting was officiated by the Utah National Guard with Adjutant General BG Joseph W. Green providing the official welcome. Garrison Manager Mr. Christopher D. Damour and CSM David C. Henderson represented DPG’s leadership; other DPG attendees included Environmental Programs staff members.
In addition to learning about installation projects and resources, attendees were encouraged to participate in cross-cultural conversations and activities. The Utah National Guard provided an aerial range tour of Camp Williams in Blackhawk and Lakota helicopters as a special opportunity to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the meeting.
