FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — On April 23, we recognize the Army Reserve birthday. For 116 years, Reserve Soldiers have been fighting for our nation’s freedom at home and abroad.
The Army Reserve of today can trace its roots to a national citizen soldier force as far back as the 18th century, and the formation of the Medical Reserve Corps in 1908. However, in 1916, the Army Reserve was officially established under the National Defense Act. Throughout their proud history, more than 1 million Army Reserve Soldiers have served in the defense of our great nation, contributing to our military’s success in every war and conflict.
The strength of the Army Reserve is its citizen Soldiers’ ability and willingness to integrate a military career with civilian life. Reserve Soldiers can excel in their civilian and military careers, with more than 120 military occupational specialty options, including cybersecurity, engineering, law enforcement, emergency management and medicine. Army Reserve Soldiers enhance military readiness by harnessing their civilian sector expertise and using it to make our Army better.
Today, about 20,000 Army Reserve Soldiers are mobilized in the homeland and across the globe, conducting missions, from deterrence operations in Europe to civil affairs support in Africa. Reserve Soldiers train and maintain the same standards as active-duty Soldiers and remain ready because of their professionalism, commitment and dedication.
Fort Leonard Wood is home to the Army Reserve’s 102nd Training Division headquarters, staff and instructors and senior leaders, as well as 955th Engineer Company of the 1st Battalion, 95th Engineer Regiment, 8th Judge Advocate General Legal Operations Detachment, and 855th Engineer Utilities Detachment.
Our Reserve Soldiers are vital members of our team; we are very proud to serve with you!
Happy birthday, U.S. Army Reserve!
