FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — On April 22, 1970, more than 20 million Americans rallied across the nation in support of environmental protection. This celebration of stewardship sparked a nationwide conversation about environmental conservation and the importance of sustainability. The Environmental Protection Agency was established later that year by President Richard Nixon. The EPA was responsible for passing numerous pieces of legislation throughout the 1970s, including the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act. Today, millions of people around the world observe Earth Day each year on April 22.
The U.S. Army Environmental Command is one of our nation’s leaders in conservation and stewardship. USAEC serves to provide premier environmental solutions for our Army and nation through programs that enable Department of Defense readiness and Army environmental stewardship. Their work includes conservation efforts, clean-up operations, pollution prevention and regulation compliance auditing. Fort Leonard Wood is the proud home of the Directorate of Environmental Protection and Management. DEPM’s mission is to integrate environmental considerations and sustainability efforts into all functional areas of the Army’s operations. Their integration efforts include reviewing and developing key NATO, joint, multi-service and Army doctrinal products, developing and delivering environmental training products, and maintaining partnerships with organizations in and outside of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. DEPM also works with the combatant commands regarding environmental impacts of operations in forward-deployed settings.
The Fort Leonard Wood Directorate of Public Works team is responsible for our on-post environmental protection and sustainability efforts. DPW’s Environmental Division oversees the installation’s integrated waste management program, hazardous waste cleanup, recycling programs, stormwater drainage, air quality management, cultural resources, and natural resource management.
