White Sands Missile Range is now offering Commercial Driver License courses to its employees, a testament to its commitment to people and their professional growth. With a CDL Class A license in hand, many personnel in the Army Test and Evaluation organization will be able to move vital vehicles that are mission-essential with confidence and skill. Whether hauling heavy equipment or transporting personnel, this new training program will not only enhance skills but also contribute significantly to the collective mission.
White Sands Missile Range has established an exclusive partnership with Mountain View Vocational, offering a unique opportunity to 12 ambitious individuals. These students are currently enrolled in a five-week program, mastering the operation of heavy-duty vehicles weighing over 26,000 pounds. This program, is meticulously tailored to meet White Sands' specific criteria.
"Our ATEC students have already taken a medical exam and received medical instruction," said Edward Cruz, Human Resource at White Sands Missile Range. "They've also successfully passed a test to obtain a learner's permit. Their journey continues with another test in El Paso."
Hector Chavez, White Sands Missile Range Logistics Manager, explained that in El Paso, drivers have to perform six different maneuvers to pass their final driver's license test, which is graded on a point basis. These maneuvers, such as parallel parking and backing up in a straight line, are crucial skills for operating heavy-duty vehicles and are therefore an important part of the test.
This new class is saving workers and the missile range both time and money. Before introducing this class, employees had to attend community college classes in El Paso, Las Cruces or Alamogordo, which not only consumed considerable time but also cost money for travel. The new class, developed with the aim of providing a more convenient and cost-effective option for training, has made it easier for White Sands workers to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge. Thanks to this innovative move by White Sands Missile Range, its workers can now take advantage of this new class, which has made training more accessible and efficient.
