The Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans event, held at Las Cruces' Veterans Park on March 30, 2024, honored and thanked Vietnam veterans for their service and sacrifice. It coincided with National Vietnam War Veterans Day. White Sands Missile Range Commander Col. George C. Turner participated in this annual event hosted by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 431 to welcome home all Vietnam veterans.
"On behalf of all the civilians and service members at White Sands Missile Range, we say thank you to all the Vietnam veterans," said Turner. "Thank you for your honorable service. Thank you for your loyalty to the country. Thank you for your dedication to duty, and thank you for your sacrifices."
On March 29, 1973, the United States completed the withdrawal of combat and combat support units from Vietnam, marking the end of the Vietnam War. This resulted from the Paris Peace Accords signed on January 27, 1973, which aimed to end the conflict and restore peace in the region. The Vietnam War began in 1955 and ended in 1975. During this period, more than nine million Americans served on active duty.
"We honor the 398 heroes we honor today because of them, the American flag continues to fly," said Turner.
During the event, community members read aloud the names of 398 New Mexicans who lost their lives in Vietnam.
