FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — On March 29, we recognize National Vietnam War Veteran’s Day, which commemorates the 51st anniversary of U.S. military combat operations ending in Vietnam.
Over the course of nearly two decades, more than nine million Americans served our country as active-duty service members across all branches of service in that conflict. Of those service members, 58,000 paid the ultimate sacrifice; their names are forever etched in stone in the Memorial Wall at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
We honor those who did not return, those who were wounded, taken prisoner and remain missing or unaccounted for — along with every person who served and their families.
Many in the Fort Leonard Wood area, including our community members, civilian teammates and retirees, served in the Vietnam War. To our Vietnam veterans — thank you for your service and sacrifice. We are humbled by your courage and appreciate your continued support to our installation and great nation. We are proud to serve with you.
