FORT KNOX, Ky. – Sgt. 1st Class Richard Mendez, a native of Stockdale, Texas, serves as a Department of the Army Select Recruiter at the San Antonio Battalion in Mission, Texas.
Mendez said his decision to join the Army stemmed from a strong desire to give back to the country, just as many of his family members did. He enlisted as a petroleum supply specialist, knowing the specialty would provide him experience he could apply to a post-Army career.
Working with the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, Mendez has led his fellow noncommissioned officers to victory in various events including the Expeditionary Sustainment Command Best Warrior Competition and the Quartermaster Liquid Logistics Exercise.
In addition to his competitive success, Mendez said an accomplishment that stands out for him is his contribution to the recovery efforts after Hurricane Ida while stationed at Fort Cavazos. Following that mission, he was selected to attend the Army Recruiting Course and knew it was another opportunity to succeed.
“I serve in the Army because it gives me purpose in my future and has helped me set out to accomplish my personal and professional goals,” Mendez said. “I feel like I learned so many life lessons I would not have received if I had not enlisted.”
Before he completes his time in service, Mendez said he hopes to earn a master’s degree and achieve the rank of sergeant major. He currently holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Southern New Hampshire University and an associate degree in supervision and management from Coastline Community College. Outside of work, Mendez enjoys running, family events, board games, fishing and movies.
Mendez said becoming a Recruiter has provided him a unique opportunity he otherwise would not have had.
“Working at USAREC has allowed me to look at the Army through a different lens and see how much of a difference we can truly make when someone decides to enlist,” Mendez said. “USAREC has also given me a better insight on the administration side of a different occupational specialty.”
Mendez said he attributes his success to his unwavering faith in God and the support of his family, who he sees as his pillars of strength.
