First responders from Fort Knox conducted their first emergency response exercise of the year Feb. 27 to ensure they stay proficient at saving lives.
Exercise organizers said they used an active shooter scenario to simulate several actions needed to save lives if a real emergency ever occurred, including eliminating the threat and quickly assessing those killed and wounded so medics could prioritize care and tend to the injured.
A handful of students from Bluegrass ChalleNGe Academy participated in the exercise, playing the role of school students injured during the incident. Each student had a list of injuries printed on sheets of paper so medics from the Fort Knox rescue task force could quickly assess them and transport them from the building in the safest manner.
The entire exercise lasted one hour, with an after-action review conducted afterward.
