FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — On Feb. 19, we honor the life and legacy of America’s first president, George Washington. His steadfast leadership and devotion to liberty were instrumental during the Revolutionary War and the founding of our great nation. For his profound contributions to our country, Wahington’s birthday was recognized as an official federal holiday in 1879, and in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moving the holiday to the third Monday in February.

Leaders, before the weekend, talk to those in your care about risk mitigation. Know your teammates and their plans; stay engaged and be available.

Inclement winter weather remains a major risk this time of year. Check the forecast frequently and be prepared for all weather conditions by dressing in waterproof layers, understanding the signs of cold weather injuries, and keeping extra supplies in your homes and vehicles in case of emergencies.

If someone in your care will be traveling, ensure they understand the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, wearing seatbelts, adhering to posted speed limits, and using hands-free devices. In the case of inclement weather, postpone travel until road conditions are suitable for driving. Watch for other vehicles having problems with road conditions, and never operate any vehicle while under the influence, distracted, or drowsy. For air travel, plan for the unexpected, such as delays or cancelations, and regularly update your chain of command or supervisors.

We are proud of every member of the Fort Leonard Wood team, and we wish you a happy and safe holiday weekend.
