FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — A new Army publication, titled “Army Doctrine Publication 3-37, Protection,” was released this month, helping to more accurately explain how Army formations plan, prepare, execute and assess the protection warfighting function — which includes the related tasks, systems and methods that prevent or mitigate detection, threat effects and hazards to preserve combat power and enable freedom of action, as explained in Field Manual 3-0.
Protection is defined in the new publication as the preservation of the effectiveness and survivability of mission-related military and nonmilitary personnel, equipment, facilities, information and infrastructure deployed or located within or outside the boundaries of a given operational area.
In a Jan. 10 email announcing the publication, Col. Kevin Siebold, director of the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence Fielded Force Integration Directorate — the preparing agency of the publication, which included inputs from an Army wide working group of stakeholders — wrote that ADP 3-37 expands on doctrine for protection described in the Army capstone manual ADP 3-0 and FM 3-0.
“The primary focus of ADP 3-37 is on how commanders and staffs integrate, synchronize and employ protection capabilities and proactive measures to preserve combat power and enable freedom of action,” Siebold wrote.
The new publication — applicable to all Soldiers and Army civilians — explains how protection is an outcome that stems from many activities, Siebold wrote, and how each Soldier employs protection.
“ADP 3-37 highlights how protection is achieved through related tasks, systems and methods that prevent or mitigate detection and the effects of threats and hazards,” Siebold wrote. “It identifies how protection’s foundation begins with individual Soldier tasks and only becomes comprehensive, integrated, layered, redundant and enduring when commanders integrate and synchronize unit tactics, techniques and procedures and coordinate with their higher echelon for required protection support to achieve mission success.”
The publication includes chapters on the fundamentals of protection, its integration and application in an operational environment, and the roles and responsibilities in what are called protection cells — designed to advise, visualize and outline protection requirements to a commander, along with prioritizing and synchronizing mitigation strategies and coordinating protection.
The publication, which is now the Army’s primary doctrinal publication for the protection warfighting function and remains consistent with previous protection doctrine, may be reviewed in its entirety here.
