In an innovative team-building event, members of the Sea Dragons noncommissioned officers gathered at Earnhardt Field on Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam for a series of unique and challenging exercises, Jan. 11. The goal was to enhance communication and trust within diverse command sections; the exercises presented physical and mental challenges to the participants.
The first activity involved a simple yet intricate game of tossing tennis balls within a circle. The catch? Participants could not pass the ball to their immediate neighbors, fostering a sense of awareness and strategy. As the game progressed, more balls were introduced, adding to the complexity and requiring heightened communication.
The second exercise tested both trust and communication in a more intense scenario. Teams of two navigated a 'minefield,' with one partner blindfolded and the other guiding them verbally. This task not only simulated battlefield conditions where noise and distance are factors but also reinforced the importance of clear communication. A unique twist was added: the blindfolded participant had to traverse the field while doing lunges, guided only by their partner's instructions. Teams failing the task were 'rewarded' with rigorous exercises, including burpees, squats, push-ups, planks, and lunges.
Following each task, teams engaged in after-action reviews to discuss strategies and obstacles faced. These debriefs highlighted the critical nature of establishing effective communication, especially in environments with prevalent external noise and distractions.
The final challenge was a test of unity and problem-solving. Participants had to cross over an 'electric fence' without breaking physical contact with each other and without crawling or climbing under the wire. This exercise required meticulous planning and teamwork, ensuring every member crossed without 'electrocution.'
This event was a physical and mental workout and an opportunity for Sea Dragons from different sections to interact and build trust. The exercises were designed not just for physical fitness but to foster a deeper understanding and reliance on each other, essential qualities in any command structure. The day's activities highlighted the importance of teamwork, communication, and trust in overcoming obstacles on the field and in everyday command life.
