Garrison Commander Col. Brian Cozine and Command Sgt. Maj. Dylan Lemasters handed out coins Dec. 12 to Redstone security officers Colton Caler, Joe Szmuko and Capt. Cornelius Johnson at Gate 1 on Martin Road. The officers responded to an accident at 2 p.m. inside Gate 1 after a driver had a medical emergency while passing through the gate.

First, the driver crashed into a barrier. Then the truck crashed into a metal barricade resulting in smoke and fire from burning tires. Caler got into the car, turned it off, and pulled the driver out of it to get him away from the fire. While Caler was rescuing the driver the other security guards secured the gate and dispatched fire and rescue. HEMSI arrived and took the driver to Huntsville Hospital. Later in the afternoon, Cozine gave the security officers military challenge coins and thanked them for their outstanding service.

“We just like to say thank you for what you do out here,” he said. “Thanks for keeping us safe today and your quick actions at the gate.”
