FORT WALKER Va. – Fort Walker hosted a twilight candlelight service at Liberty church on 11 December for the first time since the COVID pandemic ended the popular event.

Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Vincent Cummings, Joint Task Force – National Capitol Region / Military District of Washington held the service in the 173-year-old chapel, which was being used for the first time in four years. Local elected officials and members of the surrounding community joined Fort Walker’s command group and staff for the event. Cummings led the congregation in songs that reflected the Nativity, as guest orators came to the pulpit between songs, reading the traditional story.

Afterward, Cummings gave brief remarks in his homily, remarking on the celebration of the light of hope in a world of otherwise darkness, and how the candles are a representation of that light. When his message concluded, he led the group in a chorus of “Silent Night”, said a prayer and dismissed the congregation. Refreshments were served and members of the Fort Walker DPW Environmental team gave a tour of the historic church to some curious visitors.
