CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea -- Students at Humphreys Middle School participated in a ribbon-cutting event, Nov. 21, celebrating the end of construction for outdoor recreational spaces.

Michael Robinson, administrative officer at the school, gave short remarks at the entrance of the double basketball courts before 6th grader Aubrey No and 7th grader Khamran Summers were asked to cut the ribbon.

Two years ago, the middle school outdoor basketball and tennis courts were closed for renovation. During the renovation, students were limited to one outdoor basketball court, tucked between buildings, and used the basketball court inside the gym for both basketball and tennis. However, now students can enjoy five courts. Both the basketball and tennis courts are surrounded by high fences to provide safety for the children, which also limits the number of errant balls that may fly into the road.

"I hope with the newly renovated courts, HMS students can practice and hone their basketball and tennis skills," said Linda Shin, information specialist at the school.

Isabel Sibert, an 8th grader at the school, said she is excited about what the new courts will provide for herself and others.

"It gives students more area to play, and a nice and private area for students to play without being on concrete," said Isabel.

The completed outdoor basketball and tennis courts will serve 1,024 students at Humphreys Middle School and is painted in the school colors: purple and gold. Robinson said he has already received requests from the community about opportunities to use the courts.
