VILSECK, Germany- U.S. Army Spc. Timothy W. Olson demonstrated exceptional skills in the Soldier Showdown V gaming tournament and won a trip to Frisco, TX, to compete at Complexity Gaming Headquarters, here, Nov 16, 2023.
Competing in Warzone, Fortnite, and Apex, Olson had to place in the top of all three events to secure his spot in the top 12, in which points get determined by the amount of eliminations made and how he placed in each match from Jul 15 through the end of September.
"I did the best in Apex, consistently securing top three placements every week, winning two Apex weeks and one Fortnite week; however, Warzone was a struggle," Olson highlighted the challenges faced in this game.
One of the main hurdles that competitors had to overcome for the tournaments was the ability to be consistent between all three games. Each game has its own playstyle and unique features that distinguish each other with different settings.
"For me, the most challenging game was Warzone. I didn't know any of the settings," said Olson. "I had to YouTube several settings to hear my enemy's footsteps."
Despite hurdles, Olson looks forward to competing in the finals at Complexity Gaming Headquarters in Frisco, Texas, to have the chance to take home the grand prize. The final tournament starts on Dec 1.
"I feel confident. I have been practicing my skills and feel ready," Olson said.
Olson's narrative pivoted when recent injuries shifted his attention from the gym to competitive gaming. This transformation highlights the comforting function of video games and accentuates Olson's resilience and adaptability when confronted with challenges.
"While I'm passionate about the gym, the surgery has redirected my focus, and video games have become my stress relief," he said. "I'm eager to start streaming; I've recently set up my streaming equipment."
The $2,400 worth of PC prizes Olson received for making it to the finals has enabled him to pursue his passion for streaming.
The Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers program, also known as BOSS, has been working alongside MWR for over five years to provide winners of the Soldier Showdown multiple prizes. This tournament is open to all Soldiers, including Army Reserves and National Guard.
In the finals, Spc. Timothy Olson will represent IMCOM Europe and the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. United States Army Garrison Bavaria will also host a watch party at The Zone so his friends and unit can cheer him on from across the globe.
As the finals approach, Olson underscores the importance of staying level-headed.
"I have to stay level-headed; I have to stay steady and know I can win and not get caught up in my emotions," he stressed.
The winner of the tournament will take home the title of the Best Battle Royale Gamer in the Army!
"I hope the best man wins," Olson said.
