JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas — The Borden Institute, an agency of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, Medical Center of Excellence, officially released Combat Medic Specialist Fieldcraft-Limited Primary Care (part 1 of a 3 part series) as a part of institute’s Specialty Titles classification on 30 October 2023.
The entire 3-part series covers the complete course of instruction for Army Medical Department medics (military occupational specialty: 68W) across the continuum of care from routine sick call through care under fire to individual resilience and recovery. This volume, Part 1, Limited Primary Care, focuses on providing care during sick call. It builds and reinforces foundational combat medic skills.
Topics include patient assessment and management, medical documentation, pharmacology and medication administration, infection prevention, venipuncture, systems primary care and basic wound care. Each chapter begins with a list of core concepts, defines key terms and provides review questions throughout the text. Many chapters also illustrate specific procedures with step-by-step photographic “skill drills.”
This textbook is the first all-encompassing education and sustainment resource for the second largest military occupational specialty in the U.S. Army, 68W. With over 60 subject matter expert contributors, this text will be used in conjunction with the curriculum to train all future Army Combat Medics and maintain high standards of sustainment readiness for the entire career field.
The foreword for this publication was written by the former U.S. Army Medical Command Sergeant Major, Diamond D. Hough. The former U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence Command Sergeant Major Clark Charpentier authored the preface and former Sergeant Major of Academic Affairs to the Office of the Commandant, James Musnicki composed the introduction.
Michael Davis, Texas Army National Guard retired Sgt. First Class, and current Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic, was the senior medical editor and a key catalyst for completing this intensive multi-volume textbook. “This book provides as close to a current snapshot of the curriculum being taught at the proponent at any time. No longer will senior NCO’s have to ask their most recent graduates of the 68W10 program, about what is currently being taught at the schoolhouse.”, said Davis.
When asked how do you think this publication will shape combat readiness of the 68W MOS, Davis said,” This publication will increase combat readiness by providing, as close as possible, a picture of current 68W10 curriculum that is accessible through online platforms. The book was broken up into topic specific volumes, the modularity of the textbook enables other non-68W MOS immediate access to information resulting in manageable application to their mission planning and requirements.”
