FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — On Friday, we will recognize the United States Marine Corps’ birthday. For the past 248 years, Marines have courageously protected the land, air and sea.
The rich history of the United States Marine Corps is intertwined with the history of its sister branch, the United States Navy. The Marine Corps was established on November 10, 1775, when two infantry battalions of Continental Marines were created to serve as security aboard naval vessels. It has been an official part of the United States Navy since 1834.
The Marine Corps has played a role in every conflict our nation has faced. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Marine detachments served aboard Navy cruisers, battleships, and aircraft carriers. In World War II, the Marine Corps was instrumental in the amphibious island-hopping campaign in the Pacific against Imperial Japan. During the Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm saw Marine task forces liberate Kuwait; Marines have also been involved in combat in Somalia, and, more recently, Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Marine Corps has the unique ability to deploy highly skilled personnel, prepared to fight and defend our freedom across land, air, and sea, making them essential in our multi-domain battle space. Marines are dedicated to discipline, professionalism, duty and integrity.
At Fort Leonard Wood, we have the unique opportunity to train side by side with the largest Marine Corps detachment outside of a Marine Corps installation. We are honored to have the Marines of the Ozarks call Fort Leonard Wood home.
Happy birthday, Marine Corps, we are very proud to serve with you!
