Joseph Miller, White Sands Missile Range's Supervisory Librarian, participated with the Army Library Program for a year as they developed ways to enhance library engagement. As a result of their collective efforts, the group came up with the idea of celebrating a library week to encourage people to explore and utilize the technology, multimedia content, and educational programs offered by their post-library.

"Army libraries are going to be posting about this throughout the week and doing various events, and we were encouraged to do something special," said Miller. "The Graphic Novel Readathon is something I have been working towards for three years, so I am combining them."

Miller created a Graphic Novel Readathon program for Army Libraries Week with the support of the WSMR Morale Welfare and Recreation Marketing team. The readathon is open to anyone who drops by the WSMR Library to sign up and participate (the full guidelines are below). All you have to do is read a graphic novel to gain entry to win prizes. Prizes range from graphic novels that are single-volume to omnibus.

"In celebration of Army Libraries Week, we invite everyone to come out and visit us and sign up for an account. Come research, bring the kids to visit us for story time," said Miller. "I'd love to see workers come in during their lunch hour to come read for just fifteen minutes and enjoy."

Graphic Novel Readathon

Anyone who signs up to participate will get one entry in our prize drawing. Participants can also take one free comic, lanyard, and bookmark while supplies last.

1) Come to the library and let the staff know you are participating (we'll take down your name, age category [children, teen, or adult], and preferred contact information).

2) For every hour you read a graphic novel, you'll gain an additional entry in our prize drawing. For example, if you read for one hour, you'll get two entries (one for signing up and another for reading for one hour). If you read four hours, you'll get five entries (one for signing up and another four for your hours read).

3) All hours read must be reported by Monday, November 13 at 6 p.m. so we can hold our prize drawing on Tuesday, November 14.

4) We will contact the winners via their preferred contact information and give them a week to pick up their prize. If they don't pick it up, we'll draw a new winner.

5) If you have any questions, ask the library staff or call 575-678-5620.
