On October 25, 2023, the White Sands Missile Range Family Advocacy Program hosted an event to raise awareness about the correlation between domestic violence and animal abuse. The event was a collaboration between the program, the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley, and other community organizations. The event was attended by White Sands Missile Range Commander Brig. Gen. Eric Little and Command Sgt. Maj. Michael S. Cordery, who signed a proclamation against domestic abuse.
Studies have found that up to 80% of intimate partner violence cases involve animal abuse. Perpetrators of domestic violence often use their pets to exert control over their partners. This can make it difficult for victims to leave abusive situations, as they may be reluctant to abandon their pets. Additionally, many people turn to their pets for emotional support, making the issue of animal abuse in domestic violence situations even more concerning.
