Wheeler Army Airfield, Wahiawa, Hawaii — Army first responders from Wheeler Army Airfield, including a helicopter from the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade , complimented the team of firefighters from Honolulu Fire Department (HFD), and Federal fire Department (U.S. Navy) fighting the brush fire just to the southeast of Dillingham airfield and the Jump Facility on Sept. 24. The fire burned approximately 30 acres (approximately 7 football fields) with containment estimated at above 95%.
“The combined effort to extinguish the fire and protect the community were remarkable, “said Col. Steve McGunegle, U.S Army Garrison Hawaii Commander. "The firefighting effort requires team work and that’s exactly how this fire was managed."
The following Army assets contributed to fighting the fire:
- 1 UH-60 Blackhawk Army helicopter from the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade and 4 crew members
- 9 Bambi Bucket drops totaling 5400 gallons of water
- 3 personnel from Wheeler Army Airfield Fire Department
- 1 fire engine
The suspected cause of the fire remains under investigation by HFD, while firefighters remain on scene to extinguish hotspots and any flare ups.
