FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii - The 8th Theater Sustainment Command senior enlisted leader Command Sgt. Maj. Frank M. Graham Jr. passed the unit colors to Command Sgt. Maj. Brian J. Morrison during a change of responsibility ceremony at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Sept. 18, 2023.

During Graham’s remarks, he thanked the distinguished guests while also garnering a handful of laughs throughout the crowd.

“I know you just came here for the ceremony and not for a tropical vacation,” Graham joked with a smile across his face. He went on to talk about his relationship with Maj. Gen. Jered Helwig, commander 8th Theater Sustainment Command, and their travels across the Indo-Pacific, thanking Helwig for his friendship and support.

“Today is bittersweet. Two and a half years ago, I assumed responsibility of the 8th Theater Sustainment Command, and today I relieve that responsibility. I was humbled by the opportunity then, and I am thankful for it now. There is no other way that I would rather end my tour as a command sergeant major than in the U.S. Army Hawaii, in the most consequential theater in the world.”

Graham closed his remarks with a warm welcome to Morrison, leaving him with a piece of advice, “Remember that soldiers hear what you say, but they believe what they see.”

Graham’s next assignment is at U.S. Army Pacific.

When Helwig took the podium, he thanked the soldiers, noncommissioned officers, officers, and families for all the hard work they put in to make the ceremony special before focusing on Graham’s contributions to 8TSC.

“Command Sgt. Maj. Graham has been the steady hand that has been guiding this command through many of the operations, activities, and investments the TSC has supported across the theater during this most consequential time,” said Helwig. “He’s the type of noncommissioned officer [and] leader that every commander dreams to have by their side. He’s able to take complex strategic concepts and translate them down into tasks that soldiers can accomplish, to make those concepts become living and breathing.”

Morrison comes to Hawaii from Surface Deployment and Distribution Command.

“Command Sgt. Maj. Morrison, we are happy to welcome you to the team of soldiers and families of the 8th TSC,” Helwig added. “He comes to us with a wealth of experience and knowledge, and will be a great addition to our organization.”

Morrison’s comments were succinct as he acknowledged his family watching online and thanked the crowd in attendance.

“I look forward to training and building cohesive teams with each of you to meet all of our mission and readiness requirements,” said Morrison. “I cannot think of anywhere else that I want to be than right here, right now.”

The 8th Theater Sustainment Command provides mission command and sustainment solutions within the Indo-Pacific theater of operation through integration and synchronization with combined and joint forces.
