POZNAN, Poland - U.S. Army Garrison Poland welcomes its first Command Sergeant Major with a Change of Responsibility ceremony from its Senior Enlisted Advisor, Sergeant Major Joseph Cistaro to the in-coming Command Seargeant Major, Kirk L. Ray at Camp Kosciuszko on August 16, 2023.

The essence of the Change of Responsibility Ceremony is the “Passing of the Colors.” The custodian of colors is the Command Sergeant Major, who is the senior enlisted Soldier in the unit, and the principal advisor to the commander. The very soul of a military unit is symbolized by the colors under which its Soldiers serve. The colors stand as a reminder of past glories, stand guardian over present endeavors, and act as an inspiration for the future. History dictates that the colors lead the unit into battle. Instructions to color bearers contained in regulations state, “When in action, resolve not to part with the colors, but with your life.” Today, the colors join their unit in formation, and for all events signifying its presence during past battles.

Sergeant Major Joseph Cistaro assumed responsibility for Area Support Group Poland (now U.S. Army Garrison-Poland) on 1 October 2022.

Command Sergeant Major Kirk L. Ray is a native of Bridgeville, Delaware. He entered the United States Army in October 2001 and has received many citations and awards.

USAG Poland would like to thank Sergeant Major Cistaro for his service and welcome Command Sergeant Major.
