USAG DETROIT ARSENAL, Mich. Aca,!" Outfitted with safety goggles and carpenter aprons, Detroit Arsenal youth, ages 6-10 years, enthusiastically grasped their hammers and nails, eager to construct toy helicopters.

The USAG-Detroit Arsenal School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration, and Skills (SKIES) workshop excels in partnering with the community and local businesses to ensure the children engage in quality, educational, and most importantly, fun programs.

With kits donated from Home Depot, children built wooden models of toy helicopters. Volunteers from the Madison Heights and Warren, Mich., store locations donated their time and talents to safely assist the children with the project.

"The kids enjoyed building and volunteers were happy to assist!" explained Jamie Palmer, Childcare Provider. "Everyone wins!"

These young carpenters were having so much fun creating their toys that they appeared oblivious to the fact that they were also learning new skills. Increasing hand-eye coordination, improving manual dexterity, enhancing logical thinking skills, instilling a sense of accomplishment, and expanding creative abilities were some of the noted benefits of the project.

As stated in the Army Family Covenant, strong Soldiers come from strong Families. By expanding the SKIES program, the USAG-Detroit Arsenal Child, Youth, and School Services ensures the strength of our Army Family Team Aca,!" one young carpenter at a time.
