GDANSK, Poland - The Commander from the first U.S. Army Garrison in Poland met with the first democratically elected President of Poland and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Lech Wałęsa.

Wałęsa became the first democratically elected President of Poland and the first-ever Polish president elected by popular vote. He served as the President of Poland between 1990 and 1995. He was a shipyard electrician by trade and it was there that he gained the respect of his fellow workers and started the movement that would inspire his leadership as an elected official.

His story carries a message of inspiration for both the American and Polish people as it is a true example of using hard work to propel yourself to great heights: What Americans call the "American Dream".

The meeting between the USAG Poland Commander, Colonel Jorge Fonseca and the former Polish President, Lech Wałęsa cemented an already strong alliance between the United States and Poland but it also helped to transition that bond between nations to the in-coming Commander of USAG Poland, Colonel Christopher Church, who was also in attendance.
